The first MicroVentures initiative was started up in Italy in 2006 as MicroVentures SpA, private equity company specialized in the development of financial partnerships with Microfinance Institutions ("MFIs") operating in selected Emerging Countries in Asia and Latin America. The initiative was promoted by a group of Italian private entrepreneurs with specific experience in the field of social venture capital and economic cooperation with Emerging Countries (in the areas of Fair Trade and Microfinance), backed by a pool of financial institutions, private foundations and individual investors.
In the course of the first three years the project has evolved into an international network of independent initatives, spread over different countries. Today the investment inititatives affiliated to the MicroVentures Network provide financial support to partner MFIs through a broad range of products such as direct participation into equity, debt financing or hybrid instruments (subordinated and convertible debt, quasi-equity).
Beyond investment in microfinance, the network can provide technical assistance and support to other institutions focusing on market-based solutions for social development, through the activity of the not-for-profit affiliate FEM Italia Onlus.
Some of the initiatives affiliated to the MicroVentures network can offer attractive opportunities to both private and institutional investors aiming at socially responsible initiatives with sound financial returns.
